- An 18-year-old Karnataka student lied about scoring 92% in Class 12 before her suicide
- Bhagyashree failed her Class 12 exams despite telling family she passed with high marks
- No suicide note found; police have registered a case at Station Bazar Police Station
An 18-year-old student from Karnataka who recently appeared for the NEET examination and died by suicide last week had lied to her family about scoring 92 per cent in Class 12.
Bhagyashree had appeared for the NEET exam on May 2. Weeks later, she was found hanging at her home.
The student had told her father that she scored 92 per cent in Class 12 - PUC examination, whose results were declared on May 21. Shortly after her death, Bhagyashree's father, Rajashekhar, had said that she was doing well academically. "She had passed the PUC exam with 92% marks. There was no distress or problem in our family, and we were living happily. She had performed well (in NEET), and everything was going well. Maybe she had some feelings in her mind about writing it (NEET) again," he said.
However, when he checked her Class 12 marksheet online, it painted a different picture - Bhagyashree had failed the exam.
In Physics, Bhagyashree had scored 45 marks, including 30 internal marks. In Mathematics, she had secured a total of 24 marks, including 20 internal marks.
Officials said the student had high expectations about her Class 12 results.
"She was happy with the family. She had told us she scored 92 per cent in PUC. Now she is gone...whom should we blame?" an emotional Rajshekhar told the media.
The grieving father also stated that the family does not wish to accuse anyone in connection with the incident.
A case has been filed under the jurisdiction of the Station Bazar Police Station.
Cops have not found any suicide note yet, officials said.
There have been several student suicide deaths linked to the NEET-UG 2026 exam cancellation recently. On May 16, a medical aspirant allegedly died by suicide in Rajasthan. The student's family said he had performed well in the exam and was expecting around 650 marks this time but became distressed after the test was cancelled. Udyog Nagar station house officer (SHO) Rajesh Kumar said that the victim, identified as Pradeep Meghwal, was a resident of Kanika ki Dhani village in Jhunjhunu's Gudha Gaudji area. He had been living in Sikar with his two sisters for the past three years while preparing for the medical entrance exam at a private coaching institute.
The National Testing Agency cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination earlier this month after allegations of irregularities and a paper leak, affecting more than 22 lakh aspirants.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan later announced that the re-examination will be held on June 21 and that the medical entrance test will move to a computer-based format from next year.
