Kanishka most barbarous act of terror till date: PM

New Delhi: Kanishka bombing, which shook the country 25 years ago, was remembered by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Terming it a "barbarous act", Singh on Wednesday said, terrorism must be fought and eliminated with determination and joint action.

"This was a horrific incident which shook the world's conscience. It is with a sense of deep pain and sorrow that I join the families and friends in paying my homage to all those who fell victim to this most barbarous act of terrorism", he added.

The Prime Minister, who will be in Canada later this week in connection with the G-20 Summit said that, no religion, faith or cause could justify such violence or inhumanity."On this solemn occasion, we must rededicate ourselves to fighting and eliminating terrorism with determination and joint action."

On June 23, 1986 Air India's flight 182 was brought down by a bomb planted inside the aircraft. The Kanishka aircraft plunged into the Atlantic, killing all the 329 passengers and crew on board.

25 years since then, terrorism is still very much a problem, growing only enormous by the day. Various mechanisms and attributes devised to tackle cross-country and within-country terrorism, have failed to reap the required results. However, the Prime Minister's statement revived hope. He insisted that justice will not be denied. Also, Manmohan Singh assured that eliminating terrorism is high on agenda for the UPA II government.
