Kolkata:

The convoy of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was attacked in West Bengal's Cooch Behar on Tuesday, with some men throwing stones at the vehicles.

Mr Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal assembly, was attacked while he was leading a protest rally in Cooch Behar.

Mr Adhikari and other party legislators were on their way to the office of the Cooch Behar district police superintendent to submit a deputation on the reports of attacks on party leaders in the recent past.

He was also shown black flags, and protesters were heard shouting “go back” slogans. A video also showed a protester throwing a stone at a car in the convoy, shattering its window panes.

It was not immediately known if anyone was injured in the incident. Some members of the ruling Trinamool Congress had also planned counter-protests in the area.

Speaking to reporters after the incident, Mr Adhikari called it a "murderous attempt" incident and said the "bulletproof glass" of his vehicle was broken.

The BJP said the "miscreants from Trinamool" were behind the "deadly attack" that took place in "front of the police".

"The moment we entered Cooch Behar, there were a lot of anti-social elements. We had information that such a thing could happen. And so I had forewarned them. Our car was stopped at many places, the police never helped us," claimed BJP leader Nisith Pramanik.

The Trinamool, however, claimed that no party workers were involved in the attack. It also said the attack was a "result of the internal feud within the BJP".
