In a significant move in the investigation into the death of Assam's cultural icon Zubeen Garg, the state government has decided to push for a fast-track court for trial in the case.
The Assam government has also formed a committee to finalise the design and other aspects of a memorial to be built in Zubeen Garg's honour.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Assam special investigation team (SIT) would be able to file a chargesheet in the case by November.
"The cabinet has decided to request the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court for the trial in the Zubeen Garg case to be done in a fast-track court. The state will appoint a special public prosecutor for the case," Sarma added.
The chief minister announced another significant step in the quest for justice for Zubeen Garg's family.
The police in Singapore are scheduled to meet a team of their Assam counterparts led by Special DGP and SIT head Munna Prasad Gupta on October 21. The Assam team will fly to Singapore one day ahead.
This progress has been possible only due to the efforts of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Sarma said.
On the violent protests outside a district jail in Baksa where five key accused in the case were transferred, the chief minister said many individuals involved in the protest have been identified in video clips. Two people who were injured during the protest are being treated at AIIMS and their condition is reportedly improving, Sarma said.
"According to reports, when the convoy was moving from Guwahati to Baksa, around 150 people attacked it after opening the paver blocks. Police have clarified that they did not initiate the attack," the chief minister said.
