The actor's mother, Suvarnalatha, died earlier this week. She followed Christian beliefs and was laid to rest in a traditional burial ceremony at a church. Visuals from the funeral soon surfaced online, prompting some users on X to accuse Prakash Raj of hypocrisy, citing his earlier statements about being an atheist.
Addressing the criticism, Prakash Raj took to the platform and wrote, "Yes. I don't believe in god .. but my mother believed in her god. Who am I to deny her the right to be buried according to her belief," he wrote. He further added, "This is the basic respect we give one another. Will you hate mongering monsters understand this."
Background
The backlash stemmed from an old video of the actor's interview with The Lallantop, where he spoke candidly about his views on religion.
In the clip, he had said, "I don't believe in God. I have no time. When someone asked me, I told them I don't have time. To say God exists, you just need to believe. Belief is enough. To say no takes a lot of knowledge. I don't have time (for that). I live in this world only for my fellow human beings. If he's there, he's given me everything."
Earlier, Prakash Raj had expressed gratitude for the condolences pouring in after his mother's demise.
Sharing a heartfelt note, he wrote, "Thank you each n everyone for your kindness and thoughtful words . It meant a lot to me and my family in these moments of grief. Thank you Amma for everything.. love you .. will miss you."
Prakash Raj's mother died after battling age-related health issues. She was 86.
