Madhubala has etched her name into the glorious years of Hindi cinema with her immense popularity. She entered the film industry as a child artist, but it was Kamal Amrohi's 1949 film Mahal that marked her breakthrough. The filmmaker's son, Tajdar, recently opened up about how Madhubala and his father fell in love, but the relationship ended because she wanted him to divorce his wife, Sayeda.
Tajdar told Vickey Lalwani, "Madhubala, aapko ye bata doon, mujhe badi khushi hoti hai ye baat kehte hue ki probably Kamal is the only man who has worked with three most beautiful ladies of the Indian screen - the only man. Meena Kumari, that Tragedy Queen of India, the Venus of the Indian screen Madhubala, and the Dream Girl Hema Malini."
On Kamal Amrohi And Madhubala Being In A Relationship
Tajdar confirmed that they were indeed in a relationship. But his father called it off because of Madhubala's demand that he divorce his wife and separate from his family.
Tajdar said, "There was a lot of gossip around their relationship. It had leaked to the papers and everyone in the industry knew about it. Madhubala wasn't an ordinary heroine. She was a major star of her time, and she was so beautiful. There were many stories of her relationships with others as well. It is well known that she was with Dilip Kumar."
He claimed, "She was a major star and a producer as well. She had lots of money too. She said, 'I will give you x amount of money. You give this much to your wife and to your kids, and get them out of your life.'"
He continued, "My father told her, 'We won't meet from here on because I sell stories and dialogues, not my children and wife. You want me to leave my wife. That won't happen. She is a woman of my family.'"
Tajdar concluded, "My mother didn't know about Madhubala. She just knew that Mahal was being made, and it was my father's first directorial."
About Kamal Amrohi
Kamal Amrohi had four marriages in his lifetime. His first wife, Bilkis, passed away, after which he married Sayeda, and they had two children - Tajdar and Rukhsar. In 1952, Kamal Amrohi married Meena Kumari, and they remained together until her death in 1972. After Meena Kumari's death, he married his doctor, with whom he stayed until his own death in 1993.
Madhubala died in 1969, at just 36, due to chronic complications from a congenital heart defect known as a ventricular septal defect (a hole in the heart).
