About Ghatal

Ghatal Lok Sabha constituency will vote on May 12 in the sixth phase of the general election 2019. The parliamentary constituency number 32 consists of Panskura Paschim, Sabang, Pingla, Debra, Daspur, Ghatal and Keshpur segments out of which Ghatal and Keshpur are for reserved candidates. While six of its segments are in Paschim Medinipur district, one is in Purba Medinipur district.

This time Trinamool Congress has nominated the sitting MP and popular Bengali actor Dev alias Deepak Adhikari for contesting the Ghatal seat. 

The actor will contest with CPI candidate Com. Tapan Ganguly and Congress candidate Khandakar Mohammad Saifullah. Bharati Ghosh will contest from Ghatal with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket.

After winning the 2014 general election, Mr Adhikari succeeded Gurudas Dasgupta. 

From 1957 to 1971, the Congress party represented the seat in the Parliament. Nikunja Behari Chowdhury was the first elected MP from Ghatal constituency. 

In the 16th Lok Sabha election held in 2014, the constituency saw massive participation with more than one crore voter turn-out. TMC got more than 50% votes. Dev defeated CPI candidate Santosh Rana by a margin of 2,60,891 votes. Congress had received 1,22,928 votes.
