About Diamond Harbour

The Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency comprises seven segments-Falta, Diamond Harbour, Satgachia, Bishnupur, Mahestala, Budge Budge and Metiaburuz. The constituency number 21 will vote on May 19 in the last phase of the general election 2019. This time Abhishek Banerjee, the sitting MP of the constituency, will contest from the Diamond Harbour seat with Trinamool Congress (TMC) ticket. Mr Banerjee, who is also the nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, had won the seat in the last election defeating CPI (M) candidate Dr Abul Hasnat by a margin of 71 thousand votes. He had succeeded Somendra Nath Mitra, who had won the seat in 2009 with a TMC ticket. 

For the 17th Lok Sabha election, CPI (M) has fielded Fuad Halim for the seat. BJP candidate Nilanjan Roy will also contest for the seat.

CPI (M) had a stronghold on the seat from 1967 to 2009 in which Jyotirmay Basu, Amal Dutta and Samik Lahiri had represented the seat in the Lok Sabha for four terms each.

Kamal Basu was the first elected MP of the constituency. 

Last time, out of 12,61,296 votes exercised, TMC was voted to power with 5 lakh votes.

A total of 10 candidates are in fray for the Diamond Harbour seat.

Among the key contestants are Nilanjan Roy (BJP), Dr Fuad Halim (CPI(M)), Md. Goribulla Molla (BSP) and Soumya Aich Roy (Congress).

Congress had represented the Diamond Harbour constituency in the parliament for three terms.
