About Bishnupur

West Bengal's Bishnupur will go to polls on May 12 in the sixth phase of the general election 2019. The Bishnupur Lok Sabha constituency consists of Barjora, Onda, Bishnupur, Katulpur, Indas, Sonamukhi and Khandaghosh segments. Except Barjora, Onda and Bishnupur rest are reserved for the scheduled castes. Bishnupur is famous for the Bishnupur gharana of Hindustani music.

The ruling party of the constituency, Trinamool Congress (TMC) has fielded Shyamal Santra for the Bishnupur seat in the 17th Lok Sabha election. Sunil Khan from CPI (M) and Soumitra Khan from BJP have been nominated for the Bishnupur seat for the general election 2019.

In 2014 general election, TMC candidate Saumitra Khan had won the seat. She had defeated CPI (M) contender Susmita Bauri and BJP's Dr Jayanta Mondal by a margin of 1,19,685 and 3,99,340 votes respectively.

Last time, 1.64% of the votes, which is close to 20 thousand votes, were given under the NOTA option. Independent candidates Tarani Roy and Dinesh Lohar got 6854 and 6820 votes, respectively.

The constituency was a Left bastion from 1971 till 2014. In 1962 -1967 and 1967-1971 terms Congress' Pashupati Mandal was the MP.
