About Basirhat

West Bengal's Basirhat will vote in the seventh phase of the Lok Sabha election on May 19. The Basirhat constituency consists of Baduria, Haroa, Minakhan, Sandeshkhali, Basirhat Dakshin, Basirhat Uttar and Hingalganj segments. 

Trinamool Congress (TMC) party has fielded Nusrat Jahan for the Basirhat seat. TMC is the ruling party in the constituency. In 2014 election, Idris Ali had won the seat by defeating CPI's Nurul Huda. While TMC got 4,92,326 votes the CPI received 3,82,667 votes in the election. 

The constituency consists of Baduria, Haroa, Minakhan, Sandeshkhali, Basirhat Dakshin, Basirhat Uttar and Hingalganj. In 2008, the Basirhat assembly bifurcated to Basirhat Dakshin and Basirhat Uttar.

A total of 1,273,771 voters had exercised their franchise in the 16th Lok Sabha election. 

The constituency comprises over 50% Muslim population.

From 2009-2014 TMC's Hazi Nurul Islam represented the constituency. In 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004 CPI's Ajay Chakraborty won the seat. CPI had a constant victory in the constituency in 1951, 1989 and 1991 as well. 

Congress' Paresh Nath Kayal won the seat in 1956 and 1957. Congress candidate Humayun Kabir was elected in 1962 and 1967. In 1970 by-election, regional political party Bangla Congress' Sardar Amjad won.
