In 2014 general election, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Chhedi Paswan was elected from Sasaram Lok Sabha constituency with a margin of 6,33,27 votes. Paswan was polled 3,66,087 votes while his nearest rival and former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar of Indian National Congress (INC or Congress) bagged 3,02,760 votes.

Before this, Paswan was elected from the Sasaram constituency to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament of India, in 1989 and 1991 as a Janata Dal candidate.

Sasaram remained loyal to former deputy prime minister Jagjivan Ram till his death in 1986. He is one of the most revered Dalit leaders, served as defence minister of India during the India-Pakistan war of 1971.He later served as deputy prime minister of the country between 1977 and 1979.His daughter, Meira Kumar had won this seat in 2004 and 2009.

In a repeat of 2014, for the 2019 general elections, incumbent Chhedi Paswan is pitted against Congress's Meira Kumar.

In Sasaram, BJP candidate Paswan is trying hard to ensure the support of its ally Janata Dal-United (JD-U) which contested the 2014 polls alone.

Meanwhile, Congress candidate Meira Kumaris banking heavily on support from the Grand Alliance.

Though Sasaram is a reserved (SC) seat, the fight is tough for both Paswan and Meira. If Meira is playing her father's legacy card, Paswan is playing the Modi card.

Sasaram consists of Mohania (SC), Bhabua, Chainpur, Chenari (SC), Sasaram and Kargahar assembly segments from Bihar state Legislative Assembly.

Sasaram Lok Sabha constituency went to polls on May 19 during the last phase of general elections 2019.
