Live : Katihar Assembly Election 2020

In the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, Shah Tariq Anwar from NCP was elected to the parliament from the Katihar seat in Bihar. He received 4,31,292 votes. His closest opponent was BJP's Nikhil Kumar Choudhary who received 3,16,552 votes. In 2018, Mr Anwar left the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and joined the Congress, but will continue as an NCP member of parliament till his current term ends.

There are six assembly segments under the Katihar Parliamentary constituency. These include Katihar, Balrampur, Manihari, Kadwa, Pranpur, and Barari. 

In 2019 General Election, Tariq Anwar will contest on a Congress ticket, Dulal Chandra Goswami will contest on a JD(U) ticket and Muhammad Shakur is NCP's candidate.

From the Katihar Lok Sabha seat, Awadhesh Kumar Singh from Congress became the first MP. In the 1958 by-polls, Congress's Bhola Nath Biswas was elected. In 1962, Priya Gupta of the PSP was elected to parliament.

In 1967, S. Keshari from Congress was elected and in 1971 Gyaneshwar Prasad Yadav from BJS was elected. In 1977, Yuvraj from BLD was elected to parliament from the constituency. 

In 1980 and 1984, Tareek Anwar was elected twice to the parliament. In 1989, Yuvraj was elected again to the parliament but this time on a ticket from the Janata Dal.

In 1991, Janta Dal candidate Mohammad Yunus Saleem was elected. He was followed in 1996 and 1998 by Tariq Anwar, who was elected on a Congress ticket. Then in 1999, 2004 and 2009 Nikhil Kumar Choudhary of the BJP won from the constituency.
