New Delhi: In a strange case of murder, a 27-year-old man was beaten to death, and his friend critically injured, by two persons because they were staring at them, in Govindpuri area of south-east Delhi. The two accused were reportedly drunk at the time of the incident, and have been arrested.
The deceased has been identified as Shailej Roy (27), resident of Chittranjan Park area and was said to belong to Siliguri. He had recently completed his engineering course and was looking for a job in Delhi. His friend, Siddharth, is also a resident of the same area.
A senior police official said that the two accused arrested were identified as Chetan Chaudhary (21), a drop-out from Acharya Narendra college of Delhi University, and Vijay (23), who used to work in Australia and had returned to India after his visa expired.
"The incident took place on Sunday night. During patrolling we found two persons lying unconscious on the road in Govindpuri area. We rushed them to a nearby hospital where one was declared brought dead, and the other was critically injured," an official said.
A senior police official said on Sunday night Shailej, along with Siddharth, had gone to eat paranthas in Govindpuri area. At the food stall they picked up an argument with the accused, Chetan and Vijay, who were drunk. They thrashed the deceased and his friend with a wooden stick, thinking that they were staring at them, and then fled from the spot.
"Police received information that one of the accused, Chetan, often came from the nearby Acharya Narendra College area. They inquired about him at the college and came to know that he used to study there. After this, the police apprehended him from his residence," the official further informed. Official said Chetan confessed his crime during interrogation and disclosed that he, along with his friend Vijay, had beaten up the deceased and the victim, but they did not know that Shailej had died. Vijay was also arrested on account of his statement. A case has been registered under the appropriate Sections.
