The second-generation Kia Sonet has been spotted testing in India for the first time. The spotting hints at early development of the subcompact SUV that is expected to debut in 2027. The test mule was heavily camouflaged, but several design elements were still noticeable, offering a glimpse of what the updated model could bring.
Next-Gen Kia Sonet: Design
From the spy images, the upcoming Sonet appears to take inspiration from Kia's newer design language seen on the latest Seltos. The front grille seems to stretch across the width, connecting the headlights, similar to the larger SUV. However, the headlamp design appears to draw cues from the new-generation Hyundai Venue.

The test model also features newly designed alloy wheels, in line with Kia's recent offerings, along with distinctive eyebrow-shaped LED DRLs positioned above the headlights. The bumper design looks cleaner than the current version, although subtle creases on the bonnet add a touch of aggression. A sunroof is visible on the test car, but it remains unclear whether Kia will introduce a panoramic unit or continue with a single-pane setup.

Next-Gen Kia Sonet: Cabin
Under the skin, the next-generation Sonet is expected to shift from the existing K2 platform to the newer K1 platform, which also underpins models like the Hyundai Venue and Kia Syros. This change could help address rear seat space concerns, an area where the current Sonet has faced criticism. Additionally, Kia is likely to target a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating with the new model.
Inside, the Sonet is expected to receive a completely redesigned cabin with a more premium and minimalist layout. Features could include larger 12.3-inch displays for both the infotainment system and the digital instrument cluster. While advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) may be considered, it remains uncertain whether a Level-2 suite will be offered.
Next-Gen Kia Sonet: Powertrain
In terms of powertrain options, the new Sonet is likely to retain the current lineup, including a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine, paired with both manual and automatic transmissions. A strong-hybrid version based on the 1.2-litre petrol engine is also reportedly under development, although it is expected to arrive later, possibly by 2028 or 2029.
With these updates, the next-generation Kia Sonet is expected to strengthen its position in the highly competitive subcompact SUV segment, where it rivals models such as the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Tata Nexon, Skoda Kylaq, and others.
