Audi has pulled the wraps off the new-generation RS5 in sedan and Avant (estate) body styles. Even in the new car, the brand is offering something that deserves more attention than the car itself. After Mercedes-AMG and BMW M, the Audi Sportis got electrified performance with a plug-in hybrid setup. In one move, it also takes over the roles of the outgoing RS4 Avant and RS5 Sportback/coupe in global markets, thanks to Audi's model-line consolidation.

New Audi RS5: Powertrain

At the heart of it is Audi Sport's familiar 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 (EA839), shared with Porsche, now tuned to make 510 hp on its own. Working alongside it is a 130 kW electric motor paired with an 8-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox, pushing total output up by a hefty margin over the old RS5. With this, the total output stands at 630 hp and 825 Nm. Audi claims 0-100 kmph in 3.6 seconds, which is quicker than the previous RS4 Avant, though the added electrification brings a major weight penalty.

The new RS5's battery is rated at 25.9 kWh (22 kWh usable), and Audi says it should deliver over 80 km of electric-only driving on a full charge. Charging is via AC at up to 11 kW. The flip side is mass: the RS5 Avant reportedly weighs 2,370 kg, around 550 kg heavier than before, with the sedan about 15 kg lighter.

New Audi RS5: Hardware

Audi has also reworked its Quattro all-wheel-drive hardware. The system uses a limited-slip centre differential that can send up to 85 percent of torque rearwards or up to 70 percent to the front, and there's a 'pre-load' function designed to keep the diff partially locked for sharper responses. At the back, an electro-mechanical rear differential with "Dynamic Torque Control" can use an electric actuator (8kW/40Nm) to influence left-right torque split in as little as 15 milliseconds, before mechanical torque distribution takes over.

New Audi RS5: Interior

Inside, Audi appears to be listening to feedback on its newer cabins. The RS5 moves away from capacitive steering controls to physical buttons and click-wheels, and the screen graphics have been revised to be brighter and easier to use on the move. RS-specific touches include Dinamica (suede) trim, red accents across the cabin, and heated, massaging, powered sports bucket seats as standard (ventilation remains optional).

New Audi RS5: Design

The Audi RS5 is now wider in catching attention with a wider grille that merges with the air intakes on either side. This is complemented by the presence of LED DRLs with similar lights at the rear end, with oval exhausts that sit close within the rear diffuser. The brand is offering 20-inch wheels with the car and optional 21-inch units with carbon-ceramic brakes.
