Honda Cars India has commenced nationwide road testing of its upcoming Honda 0 Alpha electric SUV, marking an important step in the company's preparations for its future electric mobility plans in the country. The exercise signals the beginning of the vehicle's public road verification programme, where the model will be tested extensively in real-world Indian driving conditions ahead of its eventual market introduction.
The prototype of the electric SUV, known globally as the Honda 0 Alpha, was first showcased at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. The ongoing tests in India aim to evaluate how the vehicle performs across a wide range of environments, including highways, busy city roads and more challenging terrain.
As part of the programme, Honda will assess several aspects of the vehicle's performance and reliability. The company plans to monitor parameters such as durability, handling characteristics, ride comfort and energy efficiency. The electric SUV will also be subjected to testing in extreme weather conditions, including high summer temperatures and heavy monsoon rainfall. Additionally, charging performance will be evaluated across different types of charging infrastructure to ensure the vehicle is practical for everyday use.
Speaking about the development, Mr Takashi Nakajima, President and CEO, Honda Cars India, said, "The start of pan-India Public Road Verification testing is a key milestone in our electrification journey. India has unique driving and climate conditions, and it is important for us to test our electric vehicle thoroughly in real-world environments. This programme reflects Honda's global engineering strengths combined with a strong focus on local customer needs, as we prepare to introduce an electric SUV that offers reliability, comfort, and ease of use."
The upcoming electric SUV is being developed to cater to both urban commuting and lifestyle-oriented driving needs. According to the company, the model is intended to support a wide range of everyday usage scenarios, making it suitable for diverse customer requirements.

Globally, the vehicle is expected to be introduced during the 2026-27, with India and Japan among the primary markets. Honda has confirmed that the SUV will be manufactured in India and exported to select international markets.

Earlier, Honda had revised its broader global EV strategy by cancelling a larger electric SUV and sedan that were planned as part of its 0-Series lineup. The decision followed a reassessment of market conditions and slower EV adoption in certain regions.
