US teacher, 100, gets degree a day before she dies

Concord: A retired New Hampshire teacher who turned 100 years old earlier this month achieved another major milestone the day before she died: earning her bachelor's degree.

Harriet Richardson Ames got her diploma at her bedside in Concord on Friday. She died the next day.

Her daughter, Marjorie Carpenter, says getting the degree was the last item on her mother's "bucket list" of things to do before she died.

Ames graduated from the Keene Normal School in 1931 with a two-year teaching certificate. She took various college courses and retired in 1971.

When Ames took part in a film about the 100th anniversary of what is now Keene State College, she mentioned her wish for her degree. School officials combed their records and found she had met all the requirements.
