The Supreme Court of India is all set to hear a curative petition by activists challenging its 2013 judgement that criminalised consensual gay sex and held that Section 377 'does not suffer from the vice of unconstitutionality'. A new film, 'Aligarh' is now at the centre of public debate surrounding Section 377. It tells the tragic story of Professor Shrinivas Ramachandra Siras, of the Aligarh Muslim University, who was ostracised by his university for being gay and then suspended. Police later declared his mysterious death a suicide. The film, controversially, has received an Adult rating from the censor board. Will the Supreme Court scrap the colonial-era Section 377?
