India has favoured increased cooperation in the Arctic Council in view of the geo-strategic importance of the Arctic Sea and the region's important role in governing climate change that has global consequences.

India is all set to expand its engagement in the Arctic. External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, who on Wednesday visited the remote island of Ny Alesund with his Norwegian counterpart, Espen Barth Eide, announced that India is in the process of increasing its presence in the Arctic and at "Himadri", India's research lab located here.

Arctic states agreed on Wednesday to let nations that are located nowhere near the Earth's north to become observers to their diplomatic council, boosting rising superpowers China, India and South Korea that are seeking to mine the region for its untapped energy and other natural resources.
