Mexican woman's 'pregnancy with nine' claim debunked

Mexico City: A Mexican official on Friday denied a woman's claims that she was due to give birth to nine babies in the coming weeks.

"She is not pregnant," Jorge Luna, secretary of health in the northern state of Coahuila, told AFP after authorities examined the woman's claims to local media.

Karla Vanessa Perez Garcia and her husband, mechanic Juan Bernardo Morales, already have four children. Three of them were triplets born in November last year.

"I feel different because there are nine of them... hopefully everything goes well," Mr Perez had told Televisa.

The 32-year-old woman had said she learned she was carrying nine fetuses in January, when she was four months pregnant, and claimed doctors scheduled a Caesarean section for May 20. She lives in the town or Arteaga in Coahuila.

The woman's claims, which made headlines around the world, had prompted Mexican authorities to pledge help for the couple after the birth.
