Chavez back home after Cuba chemo treatment

Chavez back home after Cuba chemo treatment
Caracas: President Hugo Chavez was back in Venezuela today after completing a fourth and what he says final round of chemotherapy in Cuba to treat his cancer.

"I feel like I was born again," said Chavez, 57, upon landing just before midnight Thursday at the Maiquetia airport near Caracas.

Venezuela's top military brass and several cabinet ministers were on hand to welcome the president home.

"All the tests that have been carried out have been very positive...and we can say that the chemotherapy phase has ended," Chavez said. "Now we will dedicate ourselves to full recovery."

Chavez had a tumor removed on June 20 in Havana, but officials have provided little information about the type of cancer afflicting the leftist president. Officials have said the tumor was removed from his "pelvic area," but have given no indication of the severity of his condition.

Chavez travelled to Cuba on September 17 for the chemo treatment accompanied by Bolivian President Evo Morales, who then flew to New York to speak at the UN General Assembly.

In Havana, state media reported that Chavez met for nearly five hours with Cuban President Raul Castro and his older brother, former leader Fidel Castro.

Today's edition of Cuba's two leading newspapers, Granma and Juventud Rebelde, splashed a front-page photo of Raul Castro in his military uniform bidding farewell to Chavez at the Havana airport.

Cuba's communist government is heavily dependent on aid from Chavez, especially subsidised Venezuelan oil.
