'Dreams Deferred' looks at what drove the Hyderabad University student Rohith Vemula to kill himself earlier this month. As a Dalit and member of the Ambedkar Students Association, he was exploring different ways of engaging with social, political and cultural issues. And this set him up against right-wing student groups. For students like him, the lack of strong leaders within the Dalit movement remains a problem as they have no support against a state that sees all dissent as anti-national.
