Women's Reservation Bill | Centre Weighs Fast-Tracking Women’s Reservation For 2029 Polls

The central government is exploring ways to expedite the implementation of 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, with the aim of enforcing it by the 2029 general elections. Sources say the government may consider introducing a constitutional amendment bill in the current Parliament session to bypass delays linked to the census and delimitation process. Under the existing framework of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, the reservation is scheduled to take effect only after the next census and the subsequent delimitation of constituencies, a process that could take several years. Officials say the government is consulting opposition parties to build consensus, which could pave the way for legislative changes to fast-track the long-awaited implementation of women’s reservation in legislatures.
