Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said India needs to expand its participation across Olympic disciplines to improve its medal tally. Addressing athletes, students and volunteers at the Khelo India Dialogue, Modi called India’s limited participation in Olympic sports a “bitter truth” and stressed the need to develop expertise in events where the country has traditionally had little presence. He said his vision for sports extends beyond winning medals, with sports playing a larger role in nation-building. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, India competed in 16 of the 32 sports on the Games roster.
