As 40-day-long harsh spell of winter, also known as Chillai-Kalan, is underway in Kashmir, dozens of tourists are visiting the Dal Lake to see the freezing lake. A number of tourists posed near the freezing lake and some were breaking ice at the Dal Lake. Due to the cold wave in Kashmir, parts of the famous Dal Lake have frozen. Chillai-Kalan begins from December 21 and ends on January 31. Chillai-Kalan is followed by a 20-day-long Chillai-Khurd that occurs between January 31 and February 19. A 10-day-long Chillai-Bachha begins from February 20 to March 02. Chillai-Kalan usually brings snowfall, which causes the water bodies to freeze in sub-zero temperatures. It is considered to be the harsh part of the winter session.
