Wall street gains as US economy shows positive signs

Stocks inch up on Wall Street as economic data points to gradual improvement in the economy. Meanwhile, consumer confidence jumps to a 6 month high in December and jobless claims continue to fall, though third quarter GDP growth is revised down. However, ratings agency Fitch warns again that the United States' rising debt burden was not consistent with its AAA credit rating, but no downgrade till 2013.
