In his first formal speech to the Tamil Nadu Assembly, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay served a pointed reminder to critics and doubters of his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, declaring that his party had overcome "conspiracies and restrictions" to win the April-May election on its debut. The hugely popular actor was not expected to make waves in this poll but surprised all by emerging as the single-largest party in the 234-member Assembly. What followed was a political thriller as first the Congress and other smaller allies of the previously-in-power DMK switched sides, followed by rebel AIADMK leaders, giving the TVK just enough to win a vote of confidence. "Only we know the struggles we faced to get a place in the heart of the Tamil Nadu people… but despite understanding this, a few will act as they don't understand anything and criticise us, saying, 'he is just an actor and the party is just an actor's party'.
