The gap between Washington and Tehran continues to widen despite talk of negotiations. The US has proposed a sweeping plan focused on curbing Iran’s nuclear programme, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and stabilising global oil flows. Iran, however, has countered with demands including shutting down US bases in the Gulf, lifting all sanctions, and asserting control over Hormuz transit. Even as diplomacy is publicly discussed, analysts suggest the 5-day pause may be tactical, allowing the US to reposition warships and troops in the region. With both sides holding firm to sharply opposing positions and military build-up underway, the path to de-escalation remains uncertain and fragile.
