84% of India's Rs 4,400 crore plus sugarcane dues for the 2020-21 crushing season are pending with Uttar Pradesh ahead of the elections. The issue of sugarcane dues has become a sensitive one from western UP to districts near the Nepal border and in eastern UP. The Yogi Adityanath government insists that it is ensuring payment of sugarcane dues on time but reports from the ground suggest otherwise.
