More than three decades have passed since the Supreme Court asked the government to frame a Uniform Civil Code so that helpless women suffering from the scourge of divorce could recourse to law. But with successive governments lacking political will, women are still at the receiving end. Such is the case of Shayara Banu, a 35-year-old mother of two whose husband sent the 'talaq-nama' via post. She has approached the Supreme Court which has accepted the petition. So has the time come to do away with personal laws? Should India debate and agree upon a Common Civil Code? What about the lack of political will?
