Tamil Nadu today celebrates the harvest festival of Pongal which also marks the new month of Thai. A four-day-long festival that began yesterday; Pongal is believed to usher in new opportunities. The third day of the festival is celebrated as Mattu Pongal; a day for the celebration of the cattle, particularly cows and bulls. Following Mattu Pongal, Kaanum Pongal is celebrated in dedication to the sun God, Surya and has its roots in ancient Brahminical tradition. On this day, people flock to the beaches and river banks to offer prayers to Surya and enjoy watching the taming of the bull festival Jallikattu. NDTV caught up with the residents of the TVH Lumbini Square in Chennai celebrating Pongal.
