South Africa News | At least 1 Killed, Several Affected As Severe Storm Batters Cape Town

A severe storm struck Cape Town on May 11, flooding roads, toppling trees, and tearing roofs off homes, leaving at least one person dead and several injured, according to city officials. Emergency crews and residents responded as vehicles moved through flooded streets and debris, including trees fallen onto cars, while damaged houses were left exposed and waterlogged. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said communities were helping each other as authorities dealt with widespread destruction and confirmed multiple hospitalisations alongside the fatality. Residents described sudden roof damage and structural collapses, with one man injured when a wall fell on him. Along the coast, strong winds bent palm trees and whipped up large waves as people braced along the waterfront promenade.
