Slowdown hits poll sops in Andhra Pradesh

The rice bill is burning a huge hole in Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy's pocket. To checkmate the Telugu Desam, YSR had started selling rice at Rs 2 per kg from April last year. But with the economic downturn hitting revenue collections, the Andhra Pradesh government has admitted the burden of subsidy is weighing it down as 1.8 crore families below the poverty line get 20 kg of subsidised rice every month.
