Red shoes lined the front steps of Bucharest's Romanian Athenaeum concert hall on Tuesday, in memory of women killed by domestic violence. According to local statistics, an estimated average of one woman per week has been killed in domestic violence incidents in Romania, since the beginning of 2026. Event organiser Alessandra Stoicescu labelled the statistics "worrying." "The house, the home is no longer a quiet place, a place for comfort, but rather a place where violence happens," Stoicescu told The Associated Press.
