RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra On Rupee, Forex Reserves And Why India Doesn't Need Gold Monetisation

At the NDTV World Summit 2026, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra explains why he remains confident about India's external sector despite pressure on the rupee. Responding to a question on whether a gold monetisation programme could help manage dollar demand, he says India does not need such a scheme, citing adequate foreign exchange reserves, strong services exports, rising remittances, trade agreements and measures to reduce energy dependence. He also expresses confidence that India's balance of payments will remain strong in the medium term as the West Asia conflict eases and crude oil prices come down.
