Holi hai! And it is time for the eighth generation of a Muslim family in Jaipur to make gulal gota – a lightweight lac ball filled with dry colours. Unlike loose gulal, which is smeared on the face or thrown into the air, gulal gota are tossed directly. On impact, the fragile lac shell breaks, releasing gulal in soft, puffy clouds, creating a beautiful effect. Lac, a natural resin, is secreted by the female lac insect, which lives on host trees such as palash, ber, and kusum.
