Raghav Chadha In Rajya Sabha Speech: Scrap LTCG on Equities for Individual Investors

Aam Aadmi Party leader Raghav Chadha has called on the government to abolish Long Term Capital Gains (LTCG) tax on equities for individual investors, arguing that the move would boost household wealth and encourage long-term investing. In a post on X, Chadha said that while he supports the hike in Securities Transaction Tax (STT) on derivatives to curb reckless speculation, retaining both STT and LTCG discourages genuine equity investment. He noted that when STT was first introduced, LTCG was zero, and cited countries such as Switzerland, Singapore and the UAE as examples where capital gains tax on equities has been abolished to promote market participation.
