Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament in Addis Ababa, underscoring the deep civilisational, democratic and people-to-people ties between India and Ethiopia. Calling Ethiopia the “land of lions,” PM Modi spoke of shared heritage, common origins and a shared future, drawing parallels between India’s Vande Mataram and Ethiopia’s national anthem. Recalling centuries-old links across the Indian Ocean and India’s role in Ethiopia’s liberation in 1941, PM Modi highlighted cooperation in trade, democracy, science and global solidarity, including India’s vaccine support during COVID-19. He also expressed gratitude for being conferred Ethiopia’s highest civilian honour by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, dedicating it to the people of India and Ethiopia and reaffirming India’s commitment to the Global South.
