Huge jams are bringing traffic to a standstill in Delhi as large groups of pilgrims of Lord Shiva known as Kanwariyas passed through the capital and neighbouring areas. But in the last few days it has become worse as groups of saffron-clad pilgrims have been overrunning the streets with their rowdy behaviour. Kanwariyas, in an annual ritual, take holy water from the river Ganga to various temples of Lord Shiva and mostly travel on foot. In Muzaffarnagar in eastern UP, known to be communally charged, Kanwarias participated in a series of acts of hooliganism in violence. Can this be in service to God? Can anything justify these random acts of violence?
