Farmers vs Govt in Karnataka: Sugarcane Price Row Sparks Major Showdown
The farmer protest in Karnataka's Belagavi district has taken a sharp political turn. Following massive demonstrations by sugarcane farmers - backed by the BJP - Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has assured that his ministers will hold talks with the agitating farmers.
The Karnataka BJP has accused the Congress government of neglecting farmers while protecting the interests of sugar mill owners. Farmers, meanwhile, have refused to accept the Rs 3,200 per ton price offered by sugar mills, demanding Rs 3,500 per ton instead.
