The passport-citizenship debate has intensified with Asaduddin Owaisi challenging the government's position. Citing provisions of the Passport Act, Owaisi argued that passports are issued on the premise that the holder is an Indian citizen and pointed out that applicants undergo extensive police verification before a passport is granted. He also noted that citizenship certificates are generally issued only to those who acquire citizenship through registration or naturalisation, questioning what additional proof ordinary Indians should be expected to provide.
