Self-Regulation Of News Channels Should Be "More Effective": Supreme Court

In a rap to television news channels, the Supreme Court on Monday directed the News Broadcasters Association to submit suggestions to strengthen self-regulatory mechanism of the association - saying that the Rs 1 lakh fine imposed on channels is 'ineffective' - with the Chief Justice remarking that channels often go 'berserk' with their reportage. This comes after the NBA moved Supreme Court challenging the Bombay High Court order that held that the self-regulatory mechanism of the association for the news channels is without statutory backing.
