A panel headed by the Chief Justice of India has referred a plea challenging the sedition law as it exists under Article 124A under the IPC, saying that it should be looked at by a larger, 5-member Constitution bench and has also rejected the Centre's request to defer a hearing on the law due to a new law, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, being under review by a parliamentary committee, saying that even if the new law is cleared, cases under the existing sedition law won't be affected since the new law will be prospective. NDTV explores the larger implications of the Supreme Court's move, as well as the key differences between the two laws.
