The bird flu's first victim, Ranjit Mahara was a small poultry farmer of Birbhum, who committed suicide, as nobody would touch his 2000 broiler chicken, for which he was under heavy loans. ''He had taken a huge loan to start the poultry trade. He got worried when he heard that chickens are dying due to a mysterious disease. He was staring at a huge loss. That's why he committed suicide,'' said Namita Mahara, Sister-in-law of Ranjit Mahara
