Maharashtra on land acquisition spree

In a sweeping act Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh cleared some 400 files for exemption under ULCRA - just a month before the act is repealed. Sources say that the unusual haste has betrayed the government's intentions to clear as much land as possible before the law becomes defunct, several hundred hectares ostensibly for low-cost housing across the state.
