An all-party meeting convened by the Kerala government has sought Tamil Nadu's cooperation in building a new dam in place of the 116-year-old Mullaperiyar dam, which has been a bone of contention between the two states for a long time now. "The all-party meeting agreed that the Mullaperiyar dam is not safe and that a new dam should be built in its place. The meeting also discussed the need to lower the water level till the new dam is built," said PJ Joseph, Kerala's Minister for Water Resources.
