The charred remains of the Prothom Alo administrative block in Dhaka stand as stark testimony to the growing threats faced by the press in Bangladesh.
The building was set on fire on the night of December 18 after a mob descended on the premises following widespread anger over the death of Usman Hadi. According to journalists on the ground, social media influencers based abroad allegedly fuelled propaganda and incited attacks against major media organisations, with Prothom Alo becoming a key target.
