An ailing astronaut returned to Earth with three crewmates in NASA’s first medical evacuation, cutting short a months-long mission aboard the International Space Station. SpaceX guided the capsule to a pre-dawn splashdown in the Pacific near San Diego, less than 11 hours after the astronauts departed the ISS. A recovery vessel retrieved the capsule shortly afterward. The mission, which began in August, ended unexpectedly, leaving just one American and two Russian astronauts aboard the orbiting laboratory. NASA and SpaceX say they are working to advance the launch of a replacement crew, currently scheduled for mid-February.
