A senior Russian military officer was killed after an explosive device detonated beneath his car in Moscow on Monday morning, marking the third such killing of a top Russian general in a year. Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, died from his injuries, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee. Officials said one line of investigation is that the attack was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services. The killing follows similar attacks in December 2024 and April this year, when other senior Russian generals were assassinated in car bombings near Moscow. Ukraine’s security service had previously claimed responsibility for one such attack.
