Liberalism Has Been Equated With Elitism, Says Shashi Tharoor
Speaking on the issue of whether the Liberal Democracy is under threat, Congress lawmaker Shashi Tharoor spoke on why there has been a dumbing down of public discourse. The former Under Secretary General of United Nations said that for common people, liberalism unfortunately has come to be associated with elitism. He cited the example of Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton who lost out to the US President-elect Donald Trump not because she was a liberal but because a sizeable section of the voters identified her with the Wall Street elite whereas Mr Trump managed to identify himself with grouses of common people.
